Clasica San Sebastian: 230 km
Five days after I returned to Europe I was back on an airplane heading to the Basque Country for one of the hardest one day classics. A large break formed but chasing peloton kept them on a short leash. The aggression kicked off far from the steepest climbs at the finish and reeled the breakaway back. After a month with no racing, I couldn’t predict my form. As the day wore on, the sensations in my legs didn’t change, but when the peloton began to thin out, I found myself slipping off the back. My group of stragglers churned to the finish. Six and a half hours later, I was back on the bus. Over half of the competitors did not finish. Igor Anton, our Basque hero, was on good form but suffered mechanical issues in the end. Serge Pauwels was our top finisher in 27th. I enjoyed the race and hope to return with higher expectations in the future.
